Georgioupolis is on the border between Rethymno Prefecture to the east and Chania Prefecture to the west, although it belongs to the latter. The area around Georgioupolis is Apokoronas, with its picturesque villages and verdant landscape. The River Almyros meets the sea at Georgioupolis. Just before the town, it forms a little lake that is home to many birds and animals. The lake is visible from the National Road, as you approach Georgioupolis from Chania. On entering the town you see many eucalyptus trees, both along the road and in the main square, and a row of cypress trees forming a pretty picture.
Sailing conditions
Georgioupoli most of the time have N and NE with average wind 15 – 40 knots depends of the period while famous Meltemi is blowing. Flat waters, small waves and lot of space make the spot ideal from beginner to expert level. Best season from May – September.
Security advices
Many swimmers in the area during summer months, no local accommodation with rescue boat. When wind picks up lot of wave ideal for kitesurfing.
